Pittsylvania County - VA issued the following announcement on July 27
Pittsylvania County Administration held a training session Tuesday afternoon with each of the candidates running for the Board of Supervisors in the upcoming November election. Members of Pittsylvania County's Executive Team provided a high-level overview of how county government operates, discussed accomplishments that the county has made in the past several years, and highlighted some of the challenges and opportunities facing the county in the coming years.
"We wanted to provide an opportunity for each of these candidates seeking a seat on the Board of Supervisors to come and learn about how local government works, to ask questions of our leadership team, and to get an inside perspective about Pittsylvania County government," said Pittsylvania County Administrator David Smitherman. "Today we helped each of the candidates better understand Pittsylvania County government operations and some of the challenges and opportunities facing the County in the coming years."
During the two-hour long training, the candidates had the opportunity to hear from Pittsylvania County leaders about a wide range of topics. Some of the training focused on the basics of government - such as how Pittsylvania County generates revenue and what the main expenses are. For instance, the candidates were briefed on the current real estate tax rates, the average burden for each Pittsylvania County property owner, and efforts to reduce the property tax rate of $0.62 with the upcoming reassessment.
There were also presentations on some of the biggest accomplishments in the past few years, such as rebuilding the fund balance, improving public safety contributions and creating a professional EMS fleet, and faithfully paying off debt, among other things.
Pittsylvania County is governed by a seven-member Board of Supervisors, with each member representation a particular district. Elections will be held in November for three of the seven seats on the Board of Supervisors. In the Banister District, incumbent Dr. Charles Miller is running against Jesse Barksdale, who previously served on the Board of Supervisors. In the Dan River District, incumbent Joe Davis is running against newcomer Tim Chesher, and in Callands-Gretna three newcomers - Darrell Dalton, Greg Robinson, and Ryland Brumfield - are vying for the seat of Ben Farmer, who is not seeking re-election.
