Mosby sets receiving records in football's big win over Maryville

25

Averett University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 25

Senior receiver Jarrod Mosby set two single-game records as Averett University football dominated Maryville College 47-10 in USA South Conference action Saturday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.

Mosby became the first receiver in the program's 22-year history to have a 200-yard receiving game, catching eight passes for 223 yards — including 202 yards in the first half. His four receiving touchdowns — all in the first half as well — were also a new program single-game record for Averett (3-1, 2-0 USA South).

Mosby's first touchdown of the day answered Maryville's score on its first drive of the day. The Scots drove down in seven plays and took a 7-0 lead, but a little more than a minute later, junior Bryce Jackson found Mosby for a 46-yard touchdown down the right side on a free play to tie the game.

After Maryville (0-4, 0-2 USA South) retook the lead, 10-7, on a field goal, Jackson found Mosby deep down the left sideline for a 65-yard touchdown to push Averett back in front, 14-10, with 3:46 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Jackson tossed his third of five touchdowns thanks to a highlight-worthy one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone to extend Averett's lead to 21-10.

Mosby's third touchdown of the night came on a 53-yard pass from Jackson, and the two connected again on Averett's next drive for a 19-yard score to increase the Cougars' advantage to 34-10 just before the half.

Mosby has eight touchdowns this season, including seven over the past two games Averett continued to pour it on in the second half as freshman Bailey Boaen found room around the left side and scooted 36 yards down the sideline for his first career touchdown, making it 40-10. Senior quarterback Ryan Curle added a 9-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to provide Averett with its largest margin of victory over Maryville in the Cougars' eight wins in the all-time series.

The reigning two-time USA South Offensive Player of the Week, Jackson completed 18-of-22 passes for 329 yards and five touchdowns, marking his fifth consecutive 300-yard passing game dating back to last spring's season finale at Maryville. Jackson's five touchdowns also tied his career high, which was set last week at Greensboro College. Jackson has 15 touchdowns in four games this season while throwing for 1,357 yards.

With the offense clicking, Averett's defense held Maryville scoreless for the final three quarters. The Cougars totaled five sacks as a team, forced three fumbles and recovered one and picked off one pass. Senior Isaac Mosby led the team with six tackles, including 1.5 sacks. Seniors Conner Showalter and Nicholas Mintz also had five tackles each, with Mintz recovering and forcing a fumble.

Averett returns to action at home on Saturday, Oct. 2, when it hosts conference foe N.C. Wesleyan College on Homecoming.
