Averett University Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 21

No. 15 Averett University men's wrestling dominated Ferrum College 35-5 in a dual as the Cougars celebrated Senior Night on Friday in the Grant Center.

Averett won nine of the 10 matches for its first dual win over Ferrum in three tries.

Averett opened the dual with five consecutive wins, beginning the night with freshman Gabe LaVey's 16-0 win by tech fall (3:46) at 149 pounds. Freshman Jesse Alvarado followed that with a 10-4 win by decision at 157. Senior Alex Turley, ranked No. 15 by NWCA, then turned in one of the highlights of the night. Tied 3-3 late in the third period, Turley kept his grip on Elijah Martin to edge his opponent 4-3 by decision thanks to riding time.

At 174, junior George Moseley dominated Coly Oliver for a 18-2 win by tech fall (4:20), and freshman Khalil Mitchell also picked up a 10-4 win by decision at 184.

After Ferrum earned its only points of the night at 197, SeniorTrent Ragland regained momentum for the Cougars after taking the lead late in the third period with a takedown. He held on for a 5-4 decision at heavyweight to extend the Averett lead to 22-5.

At 125, Ferrum got some early points before senior Sam Braswell put on a strong performance. The No. 1 ranked wrestler at 125 by NWCA, Braswell finished in dominating fashion, winning 22-8 by major decision over J.D. McMillin. The win improved Braswell's record to 27-0 this season.

Freshman Mason Barrett also turned in a strong showing with a 16-1 win by tech fall (4:48) over Trent Proctor. Senior Brandon Woody then put the exclamation point on the already-sealed match with a 19-7 win by major decision at 141 over Ferrum's Levi Englman. Woody, ranked 13th by NWCA, improved to 21-4 this season.

Prior to the match, Averett honored its eight seniors — Nasser McCummings, David Shelton, Landon Childress, Joseph Jones, Ragland, Turley, Woody and Braswell.

In extra matches following the dual, Averett sophomore Olli Karjalainen won by fall, Shelton picked up a win by tech fall, and McCummings and junior Caleb Calhoun both won by decision.
