Five Cougars scored in double figures as Averett University men's basketball throttled William Peace University 84-57 in USA South Conference play Saturday in the Grant Center, extending the team's winning streak to seven games.

Averett (9-8, 6-1 USA South) drained three 3-pointers in the first four minutes to help the Cougars race out to an 11-4 lead. The Cougars hit seven shots from beyond the arc in the first half as Averett's lead grew to as much as 23 points before taking a 45-23 advantage into halftime.

The Cougars' lead extended to 38 points twice in the second half as Averett rolled to its second victory this season over William Peace (5-11, 2-4 USA South), which has dropped six in a row.

Junior Corey Baldwin was a big part of Averett's fast start. He scored 11 of Averett's first 18 points, including an alley-oop dunk from junior Raja Milton. Baldwin finished with a team-high 17 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Averett also got a career-high 13 points from freshman Bryce Shaw and 13 points from redshirt freshman Jem Lowrance off the bench. Junior Jalen Rowell and sophomore Jordan Lewis added 11 points and 10 points, respectively, for the Cougars, who played 15 players in the lop-sided win.

Averett outrebounded William Peace 40-27 on the glass, with junior Bryson McLaughlin leading the team with seven boards.

The Cougars shot better than 50 percent from the floor for the second time this season while scoring a season-high 84 points. Averett's 11 made 3-pointers also matched a season-high while totaling a season-best 19 assists.

Saturday was Averett's basketball alumni day as the program welcomed back former players and staff for an alumni game in the morning and recognition at halftime.

Averett travels to Mary Baldwin University on Wednesday before returning home Thursday in a rescheduled game against non-conference foe University of Mary Washington.
