Averett University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 23
Averett University baseball lost 7-1 to University of Lynchburg in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Hornets, who are receiving votes in the national poll, pulled away over the final innings.
Lynchburg (2-2), which had played three nationally ranked opponents to start the season and was coming off a win over the No. 7 team in the country, took advantage of an Averett error in the first inning, which led to an RBI single to put the Hornets ahead 1-0.
Averett knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the second, however. Freshman Tyler Wilson smacked an RBI double to right-center field, scoring senior Avery Spicer.
Lynchburg went back in front on a wild pitch in the fourth, and added another run in the fifth on a passed ball. The Hornets added a run in the sixth and seventh and two more in the eighth to inch ahead by six runs.
Only three of Lynchburg's seven runs were earned as both teams finished with six hits each. Spicer finished with two of Averett's hits to lead the Cougars' offense.
Averett is scheduled to host Marymount University for a noon doubleheader on Saturday at Owen-Fulton Field.
