Two former Averett student-athletes attend NCAA's Career in Sports Forum

28

The ability to connect with other individuals pursuing a career in collegiate or professional sports was one of the highlights for Chase Nixon '21, who was one of two former Averett University student-athletes who attended the 2022 NCAA Career in Sports Forum recently in Indianapolis.

"I look forward to an ongoing relationship and sense of communication with many of my colleagues," Nixon said.

Nixon and Sarah Shropshire '22 were both selected from Averett to participate in this year's NCAA Career in Sports Forum, which was a workshop held June 2-5. They were two of nearly 200 chosen nationally from a field of applicants to participate. Since 2016, Averett has had 15 student-athletes participate in the annual program.

The Career in Sports Forum provides an avenue for attendees to network with peers and others in college athletics while educating and helping them explore possible career paths.

"Through this convention, I gained a deeper understanding of working within several fields of collegiate and professional athletics while also professionally and personally developing," Shropshire said. "I believe this forum helped me take deeper looks into my into my strengths and skill sets, while helping me map out a plan to execute the next steps in my career path."

Nixon and Shropshire also added the NCAA Division III Student Immersion Program, which was held Jan. 19-22 in conjunction with the 2022 NCAA Convention in Indianapolis.

Nixon, who played football for four seasons at Averett, said the speakers were informative and helped him understand what it takes to achieve his career goals.

"They provided great knowledge about what it is like to work in professional sports as well as being an entrepreneur," Nixon said. "The information they shared is going to help me reach the next level. This past weekend I also evaluated my Strengths Finder Assessment and learned how I can utilize each of my strengths to advance in my career and for future opportunities."

Shropshire, who played four seasons of volleyball and one season of women's golf, said her favorite session was the industry breakouts.

There was a pro sport presentation and a pro sport panel where we learned and interacted with passionate individuals working at the highest level in sports," she said. "I also really enjoyed getting to breakout to a smaller group with more intimate conversations and focused on finding our 'why?'"
