Six Cougars earn VaSID Academic All-State honors

Averett University had six student-athletes earn 2021-22 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team, which was announced Thursday. Women's lacrosse senior Elizabeth Peasley, football senior Conner Showalter, women's lacrosse junior Kelsey Steckroth, softball senior Hannah Thompson, wrestling senior Alex Turley and women's tennis senior Inka Zeilstra all were honored from Averett.

There were 37 schools represented and 222 student-athletes honored. Honorees have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher, and are sophomores or higher.

Peasley, a graduate student working on master's degree in business administration, has a cumulative grade point average of 4.0. The native of Wilmington, North Carolina, was named to the 2022 USA South All-Conference First Team and 2022 VaSID All-State Second Team at attack and became one of only 11 players in the history of Division III women's lacrosse to score 300-plus career goals. This season she was a three-time USA South Player of the Week and led the conference in goals and draw controls and was top-five in points and top-12 in assists. She was named Averett's Barbara Kushubar Female Student-Athlete of the Year at Night of Champions.

Showalter, a sixth-year linebacker out of Cameron, North Carolina, graduated in December 2021 with a 3.77 GPA while receiving his maser's degree in business administration. He led the team in tackles with 98 on the season in nine games played on his way to USA South First Team accolades and VaSID All-State Second Team honors. He also had one interception return for a touchdown, one fumble recovery, a pass breakup, a quarterback hurry and 0.5 sacks in his final season. Showalter earned USA South Defensive Player of the Week once last fall and was named to Academic All-District Team as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Showalter was selected as Averett's Dr. Tommy Foster Male Student-Athlete of the Year at Night of Champions.

Steckroth, a junior defender from Waldorf, Maryland, has a 3.90 cumulative GPA while double majoring in computer science and criminal justice. She earned 2022 USA South All-Conference Third Team honors this season while totaling 30 ground balls, 23 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers. She also finished with 23 goals scored and eight assists in 16 games. She earned the top GPA award for junior female at Averett's Night of Champions.

Thompson, a shortstop and pitcher from Pelham, North Carolina, graduated with a 4.0 GPA in accounting. On the field, she was a 2022 USA South All-Conference East Division Second Team selection at utility and VaSID All-State Second Team. She earned 2022 Academic All-District accolades from CoSIDA while leading the team in runs, doubles and homers. Thompson batted .365 with 35 hits, eight doubles, five home runs and 17 RBIs this season. She also went 5-7 in the circle with a 2.80 earned run average in 85 innings pitched. She earned the top GPA award for senior female at Averett's Night of Champions and was recently named the USA South's Rita Wiggs Award recipient as the conference's female student-athlete of the year and NCAA Woman of the Year nominee.

Turley, a native of Chester, Virginia, graduated with a 3.62 GPA while majoring in history. Turley was one of four Averett wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Division III national tournament after placing at NCAA Regionals. He earned 2022 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar All-American honors this spring. He went 19-8 and entering the national tournament was ranked No. 2 in the region and No. 14 in the nation at 165 pounds by the NWCA. He finished as the runner-up in both the Southeast Wrestling Conference championship and the NCAA Southeast Region championship. He earned a class athlete of the year award at Averett's Night of Champions.

Zeilstra, a native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, graduated with a 3.83 GPA while majoring in criminal justice. She was a member of Averett's 2022 USA South East Division regular season championship team — the program's first conference title of any kind in 22 years — and helped the Cougars advance to the USA South Tournament championship match. Zeilstra went 10-7 in singles play, including a 5-2 record at No. 2 singles and went 12-6 in doubles play, finishing 11-6 at No. 2 doubles. She earned 2022 USA South East Division Second Team honors and received the team service award at Averett's Night of Champions.

All six were named to the 2021-22 USA South Academic All-Conference Team.
