Men's soccer edges Greensboro on late penalty kick goal

Averett University men's soccer bested non-conference opponent Greensboro College 2-1 for its first win of the season Tuesday night on Daly Field Frank R. Campbell Stadium.

Averett (1-0-2) capitalized late in the game when junior Agustin Jaraba nailed a penalty kick past the diving keeper in the 70th minute to put the Cougars ahead 2-1.

In the 41st minute of the contest, freshman Diego Giffuni found the back of the net to give Averett a 1-0 advantage off a double assist from sophomore Jonthomas Buckley and senior Hayden Brown.

In the 56th minute of play, Greensboro (0-2) knotted the score when Brady Mowers answered back with a chip shot over the keeper to tie it 1-1.

The score remained tied until Jaraba got fouled in the box, resulting in the eventual game-winning penalty kick.

Junior goalkeeper Tyler Yates had four saves on the day with a key save in the first half.

Averett returns to action on Saturday on the road at Division I Davidson College.
