Men's cross country's Ponce-Mexicano named ODAC Runner of the Week
Averett University men's cross country junior Anthony Ponce-Mexicano was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Runner of the Week on Tuesday, making history as the first Averett student-athlete to earn a weekly honor in the ODAC in the Cougars' inaugural year as a member in the conference.
Ponce-Mexicano, a native of Manassas Park, Virginia, turned in a winning performance at the Rooney Invitational hosted by Roanoke College last Friday. Ponce-Mexicano topped a field of 51 runners from Division III and II institutions. He completed the 5K track at Greenhill Park in 16:19.0, which was 26.3 seconds faster than the second place finisher from WVU Tech (D2). In addition to picking his first collegiate win, Ponce-Mexicano is now the 5K record-holder for Averett men's cross country. His time is currently the sixth-fastest 5K in the ODAC this season.
