Football drops home game to Shenandoah

Averett University football lost 45-0 to Shenandoah University on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.Shenandoah (6-2, 3-2 ODAC) took advantage of five interceptions and a fumble recovery as the Hornets held Averett (2-6, 0-5 ODAC) off the scoreboard. In the first quarter, Shenandoah got a strip sack, and Matt Conroy returned the recovery 22 yards for a touchdown to put the Hornets ahead 7-0. The Hornets added a 2-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to go up 14-0.Things quickly turned to Shenandoah's favor with the help of more turnovers. The Hornets picked off a pass and returned it 47 yards for a score, and Averett's next drive also ended in an interception that set up a 30-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage as Shenandoah doubled its lead to 28-0. The Hornets added another passing touchdown early in the third quarter plus a 30-yard field goal in the third. Shenandoah scored once more in the fourth. Down 7-0, Averett looked to stay close with a 42-yard field goal attempt, but Shenandoah broke through and blocked the kick late in the first quarter. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Lamar Horner led the team with 11 tackles, while senior defensive ends Jahlin Russell and Isaac Mosby each had seven tackles. Russell and senior Johnthan Terrell each recorded a sack. Averett plays its final home game on Saturday, Nov. 5, against Guilford College.
