Averett University Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 6
Senior's Sam Braswell and Brandon Woody opened their senior seasons with individual titles, while junior Trent Ragland took home the top podium as Averett University wrestling finished second-place overall at the Ned McGinley Invite on Saturday.
Braswell went 5-0 on the day, defeating Cody Merwin of SUNY Cortland by decision 9-2 to earn the title. Sophomore Alex Logsdon turned in a solid performance at 125 pounds going 3-2 on the day.
At 133 pounds junior Joseph Jones finished in fourth place, knocking off nationally ranked Joshua Jones of Greensboro by decision 3-2 while sophomore Olli Karjalainen picked up a second round pin for his first win on the year.
Woody finished 4-0 for the day at 141 pounds beating Chris Horton of Rochester Institute of Technology by major decision 12-1 to earn his first title of the year. Sophomore Kyle Sanders earned a first round pin to finish 1-2 on the day.
At 149 pounds senior David Shelton Jr. picked up a 15-0 tech fall victory in his first match of the day, while freshman Gabe LaVey finished 3-1, earning his first collegiate victory over Joe Brillo of Rochester Institute of Technology by second round pin.
Freshman Luke Masterton recorded his first collegiate victory in his first career match beating Trent Furman of New York College 8-7 in overtime. Masterton finished the day 3-2 in his first collegiate tournament.
Sophomore Alex Turley began his sophomore season with a second place podium going 3-1 with two wins by pin while freshman Anthony Taylor earned his first collegiate win over Robert Fleming of York College with a second round pin.
Sophomore Jovante' Hobbs and junior George Moseley each finished 2-2 on the day at 174 pounds while freshman Khalil Mitchell went 1-2 earning his first collegiate victory over Jack Haydorn of New York University with a 15-0 tech fall win.
Sophomore Jamar Christian turned in the Cougars top performance at 184 pounds going 4-2 on the day while junior Kowan Lee finished 2-2.
Sophomore Billy Baldwin battle his way back in the consolation bracket to pick up an 11-6 victory in his final match of the afternoon, while junior Trent Ragland capped of the Cougars impressive opening day showing with a podium performance at 285 pounds going a perfect 4-0 on the day, while freshman Will Longhurst defeated Brock Hofler of York College by major decision 9-1 for his first collegiate win.
Averett returns back to the mat on Nov. 13 when it travels to Fairfax, Virignia for the George Mason University Duals beginning with Bellarmine University at 10 a.m.
