Junior Caleb Kimbrough shot a 1-under-par 71 to put himself in the top 10 after 18 holes as Averett University men's golf opened play at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Championships on Friday at Paradise Point Golf Course.
Averett opened play on the par-72, 6,851-yard Gold Course for the first 18 holes. The Cougars shot a collective 10-over 298 during the first round. Play continues on Saturday with the Cougars taking on the par-70, 6,101-yard Scarlet Course. The tournament will then be split into the Gold Championship and Scarlet Championship for Sunday's final round.
Kimbrough had the second best score among golfers who played the tougher Gold Course on Friday, one shot off the 2-under 70 carded by Christopher Newport University's Robb Kinder.
In addition to Kimbrough's top score, Averett got a 3-over 75 from sophomores Casper Mellby and Garrett Mason. Senior Renan Laveissiere was two shots back at 5-over, while freshman Killian O'Reilly was at 6-over following the first round.
Miles College's Britton Khalaf and Hampden-Sydney College's Trevor Elliott finished Day 1 atop the scoreboard at 6-under after playing the easier Scarlet Course on Friday.
