Women's tennis sweeps Randolph in season-opening ODAC win

Averett University women's tennis team opened the 2023 season with a history-making 9-0 sweep over Randolph College on Wednesday afternoon, marking the program's first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win and sweep since joining the conference in July 2022.

Averett (2-0, 1-0 ODAC) made quick work of Randolph (3-3, 0-3 ODAC) in doubles action. Senior Alejandra Garcia and junior Paula Rhysen teamed up at No. 2 doubles to take down their opponents 8-0. Quickly after the No. 2 doubles sweep, junior Daniela Poulakidas and freshman Elisa Batterman teamed up at the No. 3 slot to also sweep the WildCats 8-0. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Keira Gunning and freshman Brenda Poulakidas would complete the sweep of all three doubles points with their 8-2 win, giving Averett a commanding 3-0 lead over Randolph headed into singles play.

Freshman Amelie Brune took the first victory in singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cassidy Bell at the No. 4 singles spot. Batterman won the decisive fifth point at No. 5 singles for the Cougars besting Gianna Babrera 6-0, 6-1.

Daniella Poulakidas picked up her first win as a Cougar at the No. 3 slot with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jenna Fink. Brenda Poulakidas took the seventh point one court over at No. 2 singles taking down Sabrina Dickerson 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles Rhysen was victorious over Valentina Santos 6-0, 6-3. Freshman newcomer Franka Keil picked up her first collegiate win at No. 6 singles with her 6-1, 6-1 win over Molly McNair to complete the sweep of the WildCats.
