Softball falls to Pfeiffer in non-conference doubleheade
Averett University softball lost a pair of games to non-conference foe Pfeiffer University on Wednesday. The Falcons won 5-0 and 9-0 (in five innings).
In the opener, Pfeiffer (5-1) put up two runs in the third on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to left field. The Falcons then added three more runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run single and an RBI single.
Senior Lauren Nelson went 2-for-3 at the plate for Averett (2-2), which had just three hits in Game 1.
Junior Taylor Sullivan (1-1) pitched five innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits and one walk. Freshman Hannah Zabik made her collegiate pitching debut with a scoreless sixth inning in the circle with one strikeout.
Pfeiffer, the favorite to win the USA South Athletic Conference, used a big second inning to grab momentum in Game 2. The Falcons plated six runs in that frame thanks to an RBI double, three RBI singles, a sacrifice fly and an error. Pfeiffer added three more runs in the fourth to pull away.
Senior Karsin Lee had Averett's lone hit in Game 2.
Averett is scheduled to return to action on Saturday and Sunday at the Triangle Softball Classic in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Cougars face No. 11 Case Western Reserve University at noon and Brevard College at 4 p.m.
