Averett University Athletics issued the following announcement on Aug. 25
The USA South Athletic Conference released its preseason coaches' poll for women's soccer on Wednesday. Averett University was voted 10th in the East Division.
Methodist University received seven first-place votes while being named the favorite. Defending East Division champion Greensboro College was voted second with two first-place votes, Pfeiffer University was picked third and N.C. Wesleyan College earned the final first-place vote while being selected fourth. William Peace University rounded out the top five, while Salem College, Mary Baldwin University, Meredith College, conference newcomer Southern Virginia University and Averett finished out the poll.
The Cougars will look to prove the rest of the East Division coaches wrong in 2021. The young Cougars gained valuable experience during the abbreviated spring season and return nearly its entire roster while adding several freshmen to the mix.
Maryville was picked as the favorite in the West Division with six first-place votes. Defending division champ Piedmont earned three first-place votes to finish second in the poll.
Averett opens the season on the road at Ferrum College on Wednesday, Sept. 1.
