Men's basketball falls to No. 21 Guilford in ODAC road matchup
Averett University lost 62-42 to No. 21 Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
Guilford (13-3, 6-1 ODAC) opened the contest with a 13-2 advantage in the first five-plus minutes. Averett's deficit grew to 18 with 5:09 left in the period before the Cougars settled in and battled back to finish the first half strong. Averett (6-11, 2-6, ODAC) chipped away at the Quakers' lead, getting within 34-22 by halftime.
The nationally ranked Quakers began the second half similar to the first, scoring the first 13 points of the period to build their lead back to more than 20. Sophomore Bryce Shaw hit back-to-back 3-pointers and layups by senior Raja Milton and redshirt sophomore Zach Shumate powered a 10-0 Averett run to get the Cougars within 47-32 with 11:45 to play. However, Guilford maintained a cushion the rest of the way and held off any Averett comeback attempts.
Shaw led the Cougars with 12 points, one shy of matching his career high. He also finished with five rebounds, which led the team.
Averett edged Guilford 33-30 on the glass.
Averett returns home to play the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Grant Center.
